Refrigeration Systems

The refrigerant landscape is changing faster than at any point in the last three decades. Whether you’re servicing legacy equipment, stocking a service van, or specifying refrigerant for new installations, Cedars HVAC Supply carries the refrigerants and refrigerant-system parts you need โ€” with the technical context to order correctly.

Common Refrigerant Types

  • R410A โ€” The dominant refrigerant in residential and light commercial HVAC equipment from the mid-2000s through 2024. R410A has a high GWP (Global Warming Potential) and is being phased out under EPA AIM Act regulations for new equipment, but remains widely needed for servicing existing systems.
  • R454B โ€” The primary low-GWP replacement for R410A in new residential and light commercial HVAC equipment starting in 2025. R454B is an A2L (mildly flammable) refrigerant requiring updated service equipment and handling procedures.
  • R134A โ€” Used extensively in automotive AC, commercial refrigeration, and some residential equipment. Still widely available for service applications.
  • R404A / R407C / R22 โ€” Older refrigerants used in legacy commercial refrigeration and early split systems. R22 production was banned in the U.S. in 2020; reclaimed R22 remains available for servicing existing equipment.

The R22 Phaseout and R454B Transition

The EPA’s phasedown schedule under Section 608 regulations has made R22 a reclaim-only refrigerant โ€” no new production or import has been permitted since January 1, 2020. Systems still running R22 should be assessed for conversion or replacement. On the new-equipment side, the 2025 refrigerant transition to A2L refrigerants like R454B and R32 requires contractors to update recovery equipment and ensure technician training is current for mildly flammable refrigerants.

Choosing the Right Refrigerant

Always use the refrigerant specified on the equipment nameplate. Mixing refrigerants or substituting without manufacturer approval can void warranties, damage compressors, and create liability. When in doubt, call us โ€” our team can help confirm the correct refrigerant for the system you’re servicing.
