QE QTX-3A leak detector torch

The QE QTX-3A leak detector is a halide-style flame leak detector and hand torch in one tool. It threads directly onto a standard disposable propane or MAPP/PRO cylinder. Then you draw suspect air through the flexible sampling hose and into the burner flame. When halogenated refrigerant reaches the flame, the flame color shifts. As a result, you can pinpoint a leak in seconds without batteries, calibration or a warm-up cycle.

Because the same burner also produces a working brazing flame, technicians often carry this one tool instead of two. Therefore it earns its place in a service bag on both diagnostic and repair calls.

How the QE QTX-3A leak detector works

Flame leak detection is one of the oldest and simplest methods in the trade. First, light the burner and set a small steady flame. Next, move the open end of the sampling hose slowly along joints, flare nuts, service valves and coil bends. Air is pulled through the hose and burned. If refrigerant is present, the flame changes color, so you know exactly where to look. Because the tool has no electronics, there is nothing to drift out of calibration and no sensor to replace.

Keep in mind that this method suits halogenated refrigerants. For newer A2L blends, always follow the refrigerant manufacturer’s guidance and your local code.
