Motors drive airflow through every part of an HVAC system — from the indoor air handler to the outdoor condenser — and motor failure is a leading cause of system inefficiency and comfort complaints. Cedars HVAC Supply carries replacement HVAC blower motors, condenser fan motors, and related components for residential and commercial equipment.

Blower Motors vs. Condenser Fan Motors

The two primary motor types in a split system serve very different functions:

  • Blower motors — Drive the indoor air handler’s blower wheel, circulating conditioned air through the ductwork (or across the coil in ductless systems). These motors typically run continuously during system operation and are critical to airflow balance.
  • Condenser fan motors — Drive the propeller fan on the outdoor unit, rejecting heat from the refrigerant through the condenser coil. These motors run in hot, outdoor environments and are subject to sun, rain, and debris exposure.

ECM vs. PSC Motors

Motor technology has shifted significantly in recent years:

  • PSC (Permanent Split Capacitor) motors — The traditional single-speed motor technology. Simple, affordable, and widely compatible, but less efficient than variable-speed options. Require a run capacitor to operate.
  • ECM (Electronically Commutated Motor) motors — Variable-speed DC motors controlled by an integrated module. Significantly more efficient than PSC motors, with better humidity control and quieter operation. Common in higher-efficiency residential and commercial equipment.

HP Ratings and Common Replacements

Motors are rated by horsepower (HP). Common condenser fan motors range from 1/6 HP to 1 HP, while blower motors typically range from 1/3 HP to 1 HP in residential applications and higher in commercial equipment. Always verify HP, RPM, voltage, frame size, and shaft diameter before ordering a replacement. Multi-speed motors may require additional wiring review during installation.
